WASHINGTON, DC – Four members of the National Disability Rights Network (NDRN) received the NDRN Advocacy Award for outstanding work protecting and advocating for the rights of people with disabilities. The award is given each year to Protection and Advocacy agencies (P&As) who have demonstrated outstanding work, or allied organizations who have partnered with P&As. This year, the NDRN Advocacy Award was presented to Disability Rights Florida, the Disability Law Center of Alaska, Disability Rights Iowa, and the Disability Rights Center – New Hampshire.

  • Disability Rights Florida was honored for its work protecting immigrant children with disabilities living in the Homestead Emergency Temporary Shelter for Unaccompanied Children.
  • Disability Law Center of Alaska was recognized for its work conducting investigations and monitoring of representative payees for people with disabilities receiving Social Security benefits.
  • Disability Rights Iowa received the award for its work to improve the accessibility of the Iowa Caucuses.
  • Disability Rights Center New Hampshire was honored for the creation of the Disability Unscripted video series which raised disability issues among the presidential candidates campaigning in the New Hampshire primary.

The NDRN Advocacy Award is given each year to P&As who have demonstrated outstanding work, allied organizations who have partnered with P&As, as well as to P&A clients who have successfully advocated for improvements in services that not only benefitted them but the broader community of people with disabilities.

The awards were announced during two general sessions at the 2020 P&A/CAP Annual conference which was held virtually this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Videos of the opening plenary and the closing plenary including the award presentation are available on YouTube.

“P&As across the country provide a lifeline to people with disabilities who face abuse, neglect, and rights violations,” said NDRN Executive Director Curt Decker. “Their work is of critical importance and it is our pleasure to recognize these four agencies who have shown such great leadership.”
