The Disability Rights Center – New Hampshire (DRC-NH) seeks 1-2 enthusiastic, self-motivated attorneys to join DRC-NH in protecting and promoting the civil rights of people with disabilities. Recent law school graduates and attorneys with civil and/or criminal litigation experience are encouraged to apply.

DRC-NH is part of a national network of public interest firms dedicated to advancing the civil and human rights of all people with disabilities in the community and in institutional settings. The scope of our work is wide ranging, impacting people with disabilities, including developmental and physical disabilities, mental illness, and traumatic brain injuries. Through litigation, counseling, policy advocacy and public education, we address matters related to treatment and services, accessibility and reasonable accommodation, assistive technology, employment, housing, education, and voting.

Over the last 40 years, DRC-NH has litigated landmark cases regarding special education, employment discrimination, access to housing and Medicaid services. And, more recently, our litigation has led to a historic investment in mental health services for people at risk of hospitalization, improved accessibility of downtown Concord, and made voting more accessible for people with disabilities. As the federally designated protection and advocacy system for New Hampshire, we also monitor institutions and service providers and conduct investigations to ensure people with disabilities are not at risk of neglect or abuse.

Qualifications:

• Commitment to enforcing and expanding the rights of people with disabilities across New Hampshire through individual and systemic litigation.
• Excellent communication, organization and writing skills, pro-active problem-solving skills and good judgment.
• J.D. from an accredited law school.
• Active membership in the New Hampshire State Bar and the Bar of the United States District Court for the District of New Hampshire or an ability to promptly gain admission to both.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Represent people with disabilities in individual and systemic litigation on disability-related civil rights issues in administrative proceedings and state and federal court.
• Monitor facilities and investigate allegations of abuse and neglect of people with disabilities, collaborate with providers on addressing findings of monitoring efforts or investigations, and prepare and issue reports on the same.
• Participate on task forces, policy groups, coalitions, and otherwise collaborate with other individuals and organizations on work that benefits people with disabilities.
• Represent DRC-NH in response to media requests as assigned on matters impacting people with disabilities.
