Disability Rights Ohio - PAIMI Advocacy Helps Client Move to Community

Patrick Chittum’s new apartment is small – just one bedroom, a bathroom, a living room and a kitchen. But when you ask him the best part of living there, he says, “Freedom. I can do whatever I want. I can go outside whenever I want. I can get a job. I’ve reconnected with my family.” It’s a welcome change that was a long time coming.

Indiana Protection and Advocacy Services Announces Settlement with Department of Correction

A proposed agreement has been reached in a long-running case brought by American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana (ACLU of Indiana) and Indiana Protection and Advocacy Services (IPAS) against the Indiana Department of Correction (IDOC). The agreement awaits approval by the courts, after notice to the class is given. The proposed agreement fundamentally transforms the way prisoners with severe mental illness are treated in state correctional facilities.

Landmark court settlement ensures prisoners with mental illnesses will have increased care

Dentons, Uptown People’s Law Center, Equip for Equality (the Illinois P&A) and Mayer Brown have secured a major pro bono victory in a seven-year legal battle to improve the treatment of thousands of prisoners with mental illnesses currently incarcerated throughout the Illinois state correctional system.
