JOB ANNOUNCEMENT

 

TRAVEL TRAINER (6 positions)

 

The D.C. Center for Independent Living (DCCIL), ENDependence Center of Northern Virginia (ECNV) and Independence Now (IN) of Maryland are seeking to hire a total of six (6) full-time travel trainers to provide comprehensive, individualized travel training to teach people with significant disabilities how to travel safely and independently on accessible public transportation throughout the Washington, DC metropolitan region. Each of the three Centers for Independent Living will hire two (2) full-time travel trainers.

 

MAJOR DUTIES

These positions are responsible for conducting screenings and assessments to determine the travel skills and goals of people with disabilities; planning and evaluating travel routes; teaching trip planning skills and strategies; implementing individualized travel training; teaching self-advocacy, safety and orientation skills related to traveling independently on public transportation; evaluating the individual’s ability to travel safely and independently at the conclusion of travel training; establishing collaborative relationships with disability organization service providers, school systems and social service agencies throughout the service area. Occasional evening and weekend hours may be required.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education, Rehabilitation Counseling, Human Services, Orientation and Mobility, Therapeutic Recreation, or a related field. Experience working with people with disabilities, preferably in providing travel training or orientation and mobility training, or an equivalent combination of post high school education and more than six (6) years of progressively responsible experience in travel training or orientation and mobility training, preferably in the transportation industry or with disability service or advocacy organizations. Must have the ability to interact and communicate effectively with people who have a wide range of disabilities.
