Position Open: Director of Juvenile Justice Project

 

 

The Correctional Association is seeking an experienced and committed activist to lead its Juvenile Justice Project.  The main goals of the Project are reduce youth incarceration and promote more fair and effective juvenile justice policies. The Project coordinates the Juvenile Justice Coalition, an alliance of community organizations and advocacy groups, and runs two youth leadership programs to train young people to become advocates and leaders in juvenile justice reform efforts.

 

The Organization

 

Founded in 1844, the Correctional Association is the only private organization in New York State that has legislative authority to visit prisons and report its findings to policymakers.  The Correctional Association operates primarily as a research, public education and policy advocacy organization dealing with such issues as the State’s sentencing and release policies, women in prison, prison and jail conditions, and effective crime prevention strategies.

 

Responsibilities

 

The Director of the Juvenile Justice Project will be responsible for overseeing and carrying out the project’s principal activities.  She/he will have such duties as developing and initiating advocacy strategies, including preparing policy papers and working with government agencies and the media; coordinating a coalition of organizations and individuals concerned about juvenile justice issues; preparing public education materials like a newsletter and fact sheets; arranging visits to juvenile detention facilities; supervising staff; and working with the executive director and development director on fundraising activities including preparing foundation proposals in support of the project’s efforts.

 

Qualifications

 

The Director of the Juvenile Justice Project must be able to do research and policy analysis and to write clearly and concisely.  She/he must be able to communicate and to work effectively with different kinds of people.  The successful candidate must be able to develop strategies for achieving project goals and to see to the necessary follow-up for implementing those strategies.

Compensation includes a starting salary commensurate with experience plus excellent benefits.
