WASHINGTON – The National Disability Rights Network (NDRN) is pleased to announce that United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Julian Castro will deliver the keynote address at the 2016 P&A/CAP Annual Conference.

The Annual Conference is the largest gathering of the nation’s Protection and Advocacy and Client Assistance Program staff, disability rights advocates and attorneys, and self-advocates. It is the premier national event for everyone who supports meaningful choice, empowerment, and independence for all people with disabilities.

“Secretary Castro has been a champion of safe, accessible and affordable housing in the community for people with disabilities,” said NDRN Executive Director Curt Decker. “We are thrilled to have Secretary Castro deliver the keynote address at the 2016 P&A/CAP Annual Conference.”

Secretary Castro will address this year’s theme “Housing: The Linchpin of Community Integration” on Wednesday, June 15th at noon in the Harborside Ballroom at the Baltimore Waterfront Marriot.

“More than 25 years after the Americans with Disabilities Act, people with disabilities continue to face tremendous difficulties in getting and keeping adequate housing,” said Decker. “They face obstacles like discrimination, inaccessible construction and unaffordable housing. We look forward to hearing more from Secretary Castro about HUD’s activities to enforce the ADA.”

In addition to Secretary Castro’s keynote address, the Maryland Disability Law Center will be recognized for winning a groundbreaking lawsuit against Baltimore County that resulted in hundreds of new, affordable and accessible housing opportunities for people with disabilities. The case corrected decades of civil rights violations based on race and disability. It was filed with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development which is a party to the agreement.

The luncheon is provided to conference participants. Members of the community who wish to attend can purchase tickets for $50 here.
