WASHINGTON – The National Disability Rights Network (NDRN) is pleased to announce it has been awarded more than $12 million in grants and contracts over the next 5 years to provide training and technical assistance to the Protection and Advocacy (P&A) system.

“NDRN is thrilled to receive these awards,” said Curt Decker, NDRN executive director. “As people with disabilities continue to face challenges in accessing education, employment, housing, transportation, voting, and benefits, there remains a critical need for the Protection and Advocacy system to enforce their rights.”

P&A agencies have federal authority to provide legal representation and other advocacy services to all people with disabilities nationwide. They maintain a presence in facilities that care for people with disabilities, where they monitor, investigate and attempt to remedy adverse conditions. P&A agencies also devote considerable resources to ensuring full access to inclusive educational programs, financial entitlements, healthcare, accessible housing and productive employment opportunities.

NDRN’s training and technical assistance is designed to enhance the advocacy functions of the P&As in their efforts to protect the civil rights of persons with disabilities

“We look forward to working with P&As and our federal partners in the coming years,” continued Decker. “Strong P&As mean people with disabilities have a vigorous enforcer of their rights. We are committed to providing exceptional training and technical assistance to P&As so they may continue fighting for the rights of people with disabilities.”

The funding was provided to NDRN through various federal agencies to support the training and technical assistance needs for the following P&A programs:

  • Protection and Advocacy for Individuals with Developmental Disabilities (PADD), Protection and Advocacy for Individuals with Mental Illness (PAIMI), Protection and Advocacy for Individual Rights (PAIR)
  • Client Assistance Program (CAP)
  • Protection and Advocacy for Assistive Technology (PAAT)
  • Protection and Advocacy for Beneficiaries of Social Security (PABSS)
  • Protection and Advocacy for Voting Rights (PAVA)
